Today, the title for Star Wars – Episode VIII was announced as THE LAST JEDI. This certainly has an epic feel to it that was hinted at even in The Force Awakens’ opening crawl. Announcements like this are always followed by fan responses, so here are mine. Many people aren’t too concerned about the actual title that is given to a particular work, but I feel that they are very important as those few words will come to represent that entire 2hr+ movie. I’m actually not a big fan of the new title for Episode VIII for a few reasons. It may grow on me though. I’ll admit that I still don’t like the title ‘The Force Awakens’. Here is my list of reasons for why I am not fully on board with this title.

1. We’ve already had a Star Wars movie that is abbreviated as ‘Jedi’. This new title makes it difficult to shorten the names for the
2. This breaks the trend of each trilogy having a movie that begins with the following letters “A”, “T”, & “R” (it’s nit-picky, I know).
3. The Last Jedi title seems more like a title for a finale, not the middle of a trilogy.
4. I feel like we’ve already done a “last Jedi” kind of a plot before.
5. The Roman numerals VIII don’t appear on this poster, so it looks like the title is (once again) ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’, instead of ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi’. This is at least consistent with The Force Awakens, but doesn’t match the rest of the saga.
6. People will mix this up with the new Transformers movie title, ‘The Last Knight’, too easily (which is never a good thing).
7. The red color alienates it from the yellow color used for the titles of all the other 7 (or more) Star Wars movies that have come before.

Obviously a lot of this is rather nit-picky. A Bad name can really bring a movie down (ie John Carter) and a good name can uplift a movie (ie Raiders of the Lost Ark). It is too early to judge if this title adequately fits with the movie, but hopefully these considerations can help you think about the name more critically. Regardless, this title seems to show that John Williams may be getting ready to deliver a whole lot more of The Jedi Steps theme come December 15th.
